My Gear

It’s really true that you can make great content no matter what you’re using as long as you’re driven and skilled. But, it is always topic of conversation with people in creative fields, because everyone I have ever met loves new toys. So, I thought I’d list some of the things I use for my projects and for fun.

For Photography/Videography:

I shoot with a Sony a6300 and a few different lenses. I really like the Sony system over the Canons I’ve used in the past. While they do have downsides the upsides hugely outweighed them for me. I love the crispness of the 4K and the way the electronic viewfinder shows me my exposures in real-time. My go to lens most of the time is the Sony 18-105mm F4 G OSS for the price and flexibility you are hard pressed to beat this one. I use it for work shoots and texture photos for my 3D modeling at work. It really is rock solid. I also regularly grab the Sony 50mm f/1.8 for portraits, and the Rokinon 12mm F2.0 for ultra-wide and astrophotography.

My current favorite drone is the DJI Mavic Pro

Working on the Go:

The MacBook Pro is my mobile workhorse of choice. I haven’t upgraded to the newest one, because I wasn’t convinced that it was worth the price. But my older model still works and the screen is top notch for everything I do when I’m traveling.

Working at Home:

For my workstation at home I’m running a custom built PC with an Intel Core Processor, GeForce GTX 1070, and ALL THE RAM! That’s right I’m insane. I use Mac and PC like some kind of animal. Honestly though  I really prefer Mac OS, but the trade offs they make with the desktop lines just don’t make sense to me since the machine doesn’t need to go with me.

Of course I have a Wacom Cintiq as my monitor. I love Wacom products. I started using the bamboo tablets, then the Intuos tablets, and then I finally upgraded to the lovely Cintiq.

Storage Solutions:

For regular HDs I have used WD Passport and WD Black drives for many years and they have never done me dirty. Nowadays the price is so low on the passports that I can literally get one for every project and have a separate HD for each project. By doing that I can give the client a HD with everything if they want one (and I try to have it backed up to another one as well.

When it comes to SSDs Samsung T3 SSDs for mobile storage and Samsung EVOs for internal desktop storage. If you have a motherboard that can take a M.2 SSD then the Samsung 960 EVO Series freaking screams.

For SD cards I always use SanDisk Extreme PRO, Samsung Pro Plus (Full Sized), and Samsung Pro Plus (Micro).

Software:

The number one software package is Adobe Creative Cloud I regularly use After Effects, Animate CC, Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, Premiere, Story CC, XD, Speedgrade, and Audition. I definitely am deep within the Adobe universe.

And I’m not sure where I’d be without Maya and Mudbox from Autodesk.

Finally at work I also end up using Unity 3D for 99% of the programs I help make.
